Amazon Echo Dot is finally available in almost every country. It is Amazon’s connected speaker for Smart Home. This device includes the Amazon Alexa intelligent voice assistant. Thus, she is able to speak to you, give you information and even anticipate your needs. Do you want to be connected everywhere and all the time in your home?
That's it, Amazon Echo has been available in UK since June 13. It is available on Amazon or at all physical resellers like Boulanger or Darty at a price of 99.99 dollars. The intelligent assistant is finally entering the race for intelligent assistants and risks overshadowing Google Home or Apple's Home Pod. Alexa, therefore, arrives in UK via the simultaneous output of three connected speakers made in Amazon. Amazon Echo, the original speaker. Echo Dot, the miniature version of the original assistant, as well as Amazon Echo Spot, the alarm clock version of the connected assistant.
In the box you will find your speaker, the power cable and a small guide to the first installation. Connect your smart speaker and say “Alexa” . And there was light. Echo is on and will automatically connect to the voice recognition service to respond to your request instantly. Quick and simple, your assistant is now ready to use.
Amazon Echo : What is it?
Amazon Echo is a smart cylinder-shaped speaker connected to the mains. 23.5 cm high, it has a powerful speaker and seven built-in microphones. The speaker offers good bass for optimal sound broadcast 360°, ie throughout the room. You can easily be overwhelmed by the music comfortably seated on your sofa. The echo can obviously be directly connected to iTunes, Pandora, and Spotify.
The seven microphones will allow you to be heard from any corner and interact with the device as soon as you say the magic word. Not “Sesame open yourself”, but simply “Alexa”. A name that you can change as you wish. Why not call him like your former Rex, Princess or favorite cartoon character, Kuzco, Stitch or even Daffy Duck?
How to set up an Amazon Echo Dot
Whether you have one of the newest models, presented last September in Seattle, or another of the oldest, any of the Amazon Echo is a great investment that will help you to entertain, learn and even with household chores. But, to get the most out of the juice as it should, it is important that you know how to set up an Amazon Echo and that is what we want to explain below.
Enabled with Alexa, Echo can respond to voice commands and play your music, read your audiobooks, inform you of the weather, break down the news and much more. With seven built-in microphones, the Echo is designed to listen to your voice commands no matter where in the room you are, even if there is background noise or music.
Step 1: Download the Alexa App
The free Alexa application is a must if you are the owner of an Amazon Echo. You will need it to configure your device. Download it on any smartphone or tablet with iOS 9.0 or higher, Android 5.0 or higher, or Fire OS 3.0 or higher. Simply open the app store that comes with your device and search for “Alexa app”. If you can download the application to a computer? Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi, then go to the Amazon Alexa website to download it.
Step 2: Connect the Echo
This is probably the easiest step in the entire configuration process since the Echo does not require batteries to function. Simply plug the included power adapter directly into the Echo and plug it into an outlet. When the ring of light turns blue, it will mean that the power is connected. Then, wait for it to turn orange since this is a sign that Alexa is preparing to greet you. When you have done so, you will hear Alexa's voice telling you that it is ready for setup.
Step 3: Connect the Echo to the WiFi through the Application
Next, you must connect your Echo device to your home WiFi network. The latest versions of the Echo should guide you through this process. However, if you get stuck, simply open the Alexa application and search for available networks until you find yours. If you have multiple Echo devices, be sure to go to Alexa Devices in the menu and choose the correct device. Under the Wireless heading, you should be able to see the status of the WiFi network connection.
Once you are connected, you have the option of saving your WiFi password on Amazon, which will facilitate the connection of other smart home devices or the configuration of a new Alexa device on the same network, in case you decide to buy more Echos for other rooms, You also have the option to connect your Echo to a public network, although the password will not be saved on Amazon.
Step 4: Start talking to Alexa
To start, say the activation word, which is "Alexa" by default. But maybe there is already a human Alexa in your house and you want to change the activation word for another. Simply tell the Echo, "Alexa, change the activation word." You can also manually change the activation word by opening the Alexa application, touching help and comments, and selecting Change the activation word. Currently, you can change the echo to respond to “Echo”, “Amazon” and “Computer”. It is not known when Amazon will allow you to customize Alexa so you can call it “Mr. T, "Honey Bunny" or "Jelly McJerkface."
Step 5: Start using your Echo
Congratulations! Your Amazon Echo is configured and ready to be used in your daily life. To make sure everything works correctly, you can perform a simple test, trying some basic commands. For example, say the activation word and "Hello." If your Echo is configured correctly, Alexa should respond with a simple "Hello" in return.
But of course: Echo can do much more than greet you. In the Alexa app menu, you will see two sections called Skills and games and Things to try. This is a great way to see what Alexa is capable of. Skills, in particular, can help you customize Alexa by giving you certain skills; Think of them as mini-applications from many different creators that you can use for your entertainment, organization, news and much more.
You can start using your Echo device with a list of tasks, find out the weather, check traffic conditions, call your friends, send text messages to your family, transmit podcasts or connect smart home devices. Alexa has thousands of essential skills - and others not so essential - that you can also add. Check out some of the most useful things that Amazon Echo can help you do.
Step 6 (optional): Connect the other smart devices or an external speaker
Go to your Alexa app menu and select Smart Home (Alexa can show you an ad right now, from which you can exit). In this mode, Alexa will try to find nearby and connected smart devices so you can pair them. You can also choose Add device if Alexa has trouble locating the device you have in mind. You can also organize devices in Groups and create more complex schemes where several devices interact at the same time. See our publication on Routines for more information.
The Amazon Echo can also play music, and the sound quality has improved with the second generation model. To make sure you get a first-class listening experience (when mixed with music or listening to audiobooks), you have the option of connecting an external speaker to your Echo device. For best results, get a certified Bluetooth speaker to be compatible with Echo devices. Keep in mind, of course, that your Echo can only be connected to one Bluetooth device at a time, so if a unit is already connected to your Echo, you will have to synchronize them before you can connect an external speaker.
Echo Dot Compatible Devices
If you already have an Amazon smart speaker or plan to buy it, in this purchase guide for devices compatible with Amazon Echo you will find a series of gadgets to maximize your functions and turn your home into a smart home: light bulbs, thermostats, plugs, and more.

Samsung SmartThings hub V3.

Smart light bulbs
Because of its simplicity of use and assembly and its relatively affordable price (if compared with other home automation elements), smart bulbs are usually the first smart devices to shape our home automation fabric.
One of the most popular ranges is the Philips Hue. They are not the most affordable, but because of their versatility, quality and depth of their catalog, they constitute a robust and proven solution that offers a lot of possibilities of use and configuration.
The smart plugs are together with the bulbs, another moderately affordable home automation element that is easy to use and install that allows us to control and personalize the use of "dumb" appliances with voice and mobile, as it is possible to turn them off, on, program them, introduce them in automated routines and even in some cases know their energy consumption.
Security and surveillance cameras
Intelligent security and surveillance cameras allow us to go one step further in the demonetization of our home, taking advantage of our ecosystem to monitor rooms or exteriors, so that they go into action or give the alarm when they detect movement so that they alert us before intruders or allow us to ensure the welfare of our loved ones.
In this type of camera, we will pay attention to the resolution they offer us, their design (especially if it is used outdoors) and the available storage options.
